Nonviolent protests during the Civil Rights Movement often faced strong reactions from the police and other groups.

1. Police Response:

   • The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) figured that over $4.2 million was used to stop protests.
   • A big event happened during the Birmingham campaign in 1963. Police used fire hoses and dogs to attack peaceful protesters. This led to more than 3,000 people being arrested.

2. Groups Against Civil Rights:

   • The Ku Klux Klan carried out more than 200 violent attacks on civil rights activists between 1956 and 1965. There were also hundreds of bombings during this time.
