  2. How Emotions Are Affected: When we face something stressful, the amygdala gets busy. It sends out signals to different parts of the brain. Then, the prefrontal cortex comes in to help. It looks at the situation and decides how to react. This can either make feelings of fear or anxiety stronger or help calm them down.

  3. Helping Us Calm Down: The descending pathways are also great at helping us change from feeling scared to feeling calm. For example, when we use coping methods or think positively, these pathways help lessen the strength of our emotions. This process is often called "top-down processing."
