How Do Food Chains Illustrate the Flow of Energy in Ecosystems?

Food chains explain how energy flows in nature. Let’s break it down simply:

  • Producers: These are plants that turn sunlight into energy.

  • Primary Consumers: These are herbivores, or animals that eat plants. They get energy by eating the plants.

  • Secondary Consumers: These are carnivores, or animals that eat herbivores. They get energy by eating those plant-eating animals.

At each step of this process, called a trophic level, we lose a lot of energy—about 90%!

This shows us how energy moves and changes in the natural world.
