Genetic mutations play a big role in evolution. They help create new genetic differences, which means individuals in a species can look or behave differently.

How They Work:

  1. Random Changes: Mutations can happen by chance when DNA is copied during cell division or because of things in the environment.

  2. Types of Mutations:

    • Beneficial: Some mutations are good! For example, certain bacteria can become resistant to antibiotics.
    • Neutral: Some mutations don't really change anything at all.
    • Harmful: Other mutations can lead to diseases and health problems.

Example:

Take the peppered moth as an example. During the Industrial Revolution, the trees became dark because of pollution. Dark-colored moths were easier to see on these trees, so they did better and survived more often than lighter ones. This shows how natural selection works!

In short, mutations create variety in species. This diversity helps them evolve and adapt over time!
