How Do Tides Influence Coastal Processes and Sediment Transport?

Tides play a big role in shaping our coastlines and moving materials like sand and silt. Here’s how they do it:

  • Tidal Range: In the UK, the average difference between high and low tide is about 4 meters. In some places, like the Severn Estuary, it can be as much as 7 meters!

  • Erosion and Deposition: During spring tides, which happen when the tide is at its highest, strong waves can wash away sediments. On the other hand, during neap tides, when the tide is at its lowest, the waves are much gentler, allowing sediments to settle and build up.

  • Sediment Transport: Tides help carry sand and silt along the coast. It's estimated that around 50 million tonnes of sediment is moved up and down the UK’s coastline each year!

  • Mangrove Dynamics: The rising and falling tides help keep coastal ecosystems healthy. This supports a variety of plants and animals and helps protect shorelines from erosion.
