How Does Non-Fiction Differ from Other Writing Genres in Style and Purpose?

Non-fiction is different from other types of writing mostly because of its style and purpose.

Style

  • Facts Matter: Non-fiction is based on real-life events and information. It usually has a clear and easy-to-understand tone.
  • Storytelling: While it can use some storytelling techniques, the main goal is to make things clear and accurate, not just to entertain.

Purpose

  • Teach and Inform: The main goal is to share facts, ideas, or arguments. This can be seen in biographies or textbooks.
  • Convince: Essays may try to change someone's opinion or persuade them to see things in a certain way.

On the other hand, fiction focuses more on imagination. These stories aim to create emotions or encourage deep thinking but don’t always have to stick to what is real.
