  1. Place Value System: Every digit in a number has a special value based on where it is. For example, in the number 5,482:

    • The digit 5 means 5,000.
    • The digit 4 means 400.
    • The digit 8 means 80.
    • The digit 2 means just 2.
  2. Comparison: Place value helps us know which big number is bigger. For instance, 12,456 is larger than 12,346 because the first two digits (12) are the same, but in the next spot, 4 is more than 3.

  3. Ordering: When we put numbers in order, we start from the left. This way, we can arrange them by their value. For example:

    • 20,000
    • 1,500
    • 500

In order, it goes: 500, 1,500, and then 20,000.
