ATP creation is quite different when we look at aerobic and anaerobic processes:
Aerobic metabolism: This method produces about 36 to 38 ATP from one glucose molecule. It does a great job using oxygen in a process called the electron transport chain.
Anaerobic metabolism: In this case, only about 2 ATP are made from one glucose. This process relies on glycolysis and produces byproducts like lactate or ethanol.
From what I’ve seen, this shows how important oxygen is for getting the most energy. That’s one of the main reasons why endurance athletes work hard to improve their aerobic capacity!
