How Does Typography Impact User Attention and Retention in Interface Design?

Typography plays a big role in grabbing users' attention and helping them remember information when they use a website or app. Here are some important parts of typography to think about:

  • Line Length: This is about how long each line of text is. Research shows that lines should be around 50 to 75 characters long. If lines are too long, it can make readers lose focus. If they’re too short, it can break up the flow of reading.

  • Line Height: This is the space between the lines of text. A good line height is usually 1.5 to 1.6 times the size of the text. This helps the text look more spacious and easy to read. If the lines are too close together, it can make people tired and distracted.

  • Letter Spacing: This refers to how far apart the letters are in a word. A good rule to follow is to set letter spacing at about 0.5% to 1% of the text size. If the letters are too spread out, they can feel disconnected. But if they are too close together, they can blend into a block, making it hard to read.

In summary, these factors are key for making websites and apps easy to read and understand. Good typography keeps users interested, which helps them remember what they read. By making smart design choices with typography, we not only make things look nice, but we also help users have a better experience when they’re interacting with digital content.
