How Is Bond Length Affected by the Type of Covalent Bond?

Bond length can change depending on what kind of covalent bond it is.

  • Single Bonds: These are the longest bonds. In a single bond, two atoms share one pair of electrons.

  • Double Bonds: In double bonds, the atoms share two pairs of electrons. This makes the bond shorter than a single bond.

  • Triple Bonds: Triple bonds are the shortest. This is because three pairs of electrons are shared, which pulls the atoms closer together.

So, the more pairs of electrons that are shared, the shorter the bond length!
