To What Extent Do Film Franchises Contribute to or Challenge Sexist Narratives?

Film franchises can really shape how we think about gender roles.

A study from 2017 by the University of Southern California showed that in the biggest movies, only about 20% of the speaking parts were for women.

This is important because how female characters are shown often sticks to old stereotypes. For example, only 34% of female characters were shown as working professionals, while 61% of male characters were.

On the other hand, some franchises like Wonder Woman (2017) and Black Panther (2018) have done much better.

These films made over 800millionand800 million and 1.3 billion, respectively. They also did a great job of showing more different kinds of people and breaking traditional gender roles.
