What Are Some Essential Phrases for Everyday Situations in Japanese?

When you start learning Japanese, knowing some key phrases can really help in everyday situations. Here are some important ones that I’ve found really helpful!

Greetings

  1. こんにちは (Konnichiwa) - Hello / Good afternoon
  2. おはようございます (Ohayou gozaimasu) - Good morning
  3. こんばんは (Konbanwa) - Good evening

Common Courtesy

  1. ありがとうございます (Arigatou gozaimasu) - Thank you
  2. すみません (Sumimasen) - Excuse me / I'm sorry
  3. どういたしまして (Douitashimashite) - You’re welcome

Asking for Help

  1. これは何ですか? (Kore wa nan desu ka?) - What is this?
  2. 助けてください (Tasukete kudasai) - Please help me
  3. ちょっと待ってください (Chotto matte kudasai) - Please wait a moment

At a Restaurant

  1. メニューをください (Menyuu o kudasai) - Please give me the menu
  2. お会計をお願いします (Okaikei o onegaishimasu) - The check, please
