When we learn about acids and bases, there are some important things to remember.
Acids:
- Taste: Acids usually taste sour. Think about lemon juice or vinegar!
- pH: Their pH is lower than 7. The smaller the number, the stronger the acid is.
- Reactivity: Acids can react with metals. This can create hydrogen gas!
Bases:
- Taste: Bases often taste bitter. But remember, it’s not safe to taste them—always be careful!
- Feel: They typically feel slippery or like soap. That’s why soap is a base!
- pH: Bases have a pH greater than 7. The larger the number, the stronger the base.
The pH Scale:
- The pH scale lets us measure how acidic or basic something is, and it goes from 0 to 14.
- 0-6: acidic
- 7: neutral (like pure water)
- 8-14: basic
Examples:
- Acids: Hydrochloric acid (HCl), citric acid
- Bases: Sodium hydroxide (NaOH), baking soda
Knowing these properties helps us understand how different substances work together in chemistry!
