What Basic First Aid Skills Should Year 1 Students Be Aware of in Case of an Injury?

When it comes to first aid skills for Year 1 students in gym class, it’s really important to know a few basic things. Here’s a simple list of what every kid should know:

  1. Calling for Help: If someone gets hurt, always tell an adult right away. It’s really important to let a teacher or coach know.

  2. Checking the Situation: Before you do anything else, see if the person is awake and breathing. This helps you understand how bad the injury might be.

  3. Wounds: For small cuts and scrapes, clean the area with water and put on a band-aid. If it’s bleeding, gently press a cloth against it.

  4. Sprains and Strains:

    • Use the R.I.C.E method:
      • Rest the hurt area,
      • Ice it to help with swelling,
      • Compress it with a bandage,
      • Elevate it above heart level.
  5. Staying Calm: Remind everyone to stay calm. This can help everyone feel safer and focus on fixing the problem.

With these easy skills, students can feel more sure of themselves when dealing with bumps and bruises during PE!
