What Is the Connection Between Heat, Temperature, and Energy?

Heat, temperature, and energy are related ideas, but they are not the same.

  • Heat is the energy that moves between things because they are at different temperatures.
  • Temperature tells us how hot or cold something is. It shows the average energy of the tiny parts (particles) that make up the object.

When you heat something, like water, you add energy to it. This makes its temperature go up.

This relationship is helpful to explain everyday things, like why ice melts when you hold it in your hand!
