What Role Does Amplitude Play in Determining the Loudness of Sound?

Amplitude is an important part of how loud a sound is.

It measures how far the particles in a medium move from their resting spot when sound waves go through.

The bigger the amplitude, the more energy the sound wave has.


  1. How Amplitude Relates to Intensity:
    • Sound intensity is about how much power there is in a certain area. It's measured in watts per square meter (W/m²).
    • Amplitude and intensity are directly connected.
    • This means if the amplitude gets twice as big, the intensity becomes four times greater!

  1. How We Perceive Loudness:
    • How humans hear loudness works in a special way.
    • If the loudness goes up by 10 decibels (dB), we often feel like the sound has doubled in loudness.
    • For example, a sound at 10 dB feels twice as loud as a sound at 0 dB. This shows how amplitude affects our experience of sound intensity.
