What Role Does Long-Term Memory Play in the Information Processing Model?

Long-term memory is super important for how we understand information. You can think of it like a big library where we keep everything we’ve learned. Let’s break down how it works:

  • Storage: When we take in information from our surroundings, we decide what is important. If it is important, we send it to long-term memory to be stored away.

  • Retrieval: When we want to remember something, long-term memory helps us pull out that information we stored before.

  • Encoding: This is about changing the information into a format that can be stored easily. Things like repeating the information or using memory tricks can help us with this.

From what I’ve noticed, if we link new information to stuff we already know, it becomes a lot easier to remember it later!
