How Surface Area Affects Reaction Rates

Surface area plays an important role in how quickly reactions happen. When there is more surface area, reactants can interact more easily.

This can be explained using something called collision theory. Here’s the main idea:

  • The bigger the surface area, the more often particles bump into each other.
  • When dealing with solid materials, doubling the surface area can speed up the reaction rate by up to 50%.

For example, when we use powdered solids, they can react 10 to 100 times faster than bigger pieces. This happens because powdered solids have a higher surface area compared to their size.
