What Steps Can You Take to Practice Active Listening in Your Next Negotiation?

To get better at listening during your next negotiation, try these simple steps:

  1. Keep Eye Contact: Look at the person talking. This shows you're interested. You can nod your head now and then to show you understand.

  2. Repeat Back: Say back what the other person said, but in your own words. For example, “So, you need this done by next week, right?”

  3. Ask Questions: Use questions that can't be answered with just "yes" or "no." For example, you might say, “Can you explain what’s most important to you?”

  4. Don’t Interrupt: Let the other person finish speaking. This shows you respect them and want to hear what they have to say.

Using these tips will help you talk better and make your negotiations more successful.
