  • When you’re at the top of a roller coaster, you have potential energy (PE), which is energy stored due to your height.

  • As the coaster goes down, that potential energy turns into kinetic energy (KE), which makes it move faster.

  • There’s a formula for potential energy:

    • ( PE = mgh )
      • ( m ) = mass (how heavy something is)
      • ( g ) = gravity (which pulls us down) at about ( 9.81 , m/s^2 )
      • ( h ) = height above the ground
  • During a roller coaster ride, about 80% of energy can be conserved in a perfect world. However, in real life, some energy is lost due to friction.

2. Pendulums

  • A pendulum swings back and forth, constantly changing energy forms. At its highest point, it has the most potential energy. At its lowest point, it has the most kinetic energy.
